Welcome to Our Site

Thank you for visiting our online archive.

The purpose of this online repository is to commemorate the achievements of the weather researchers Nonaka Itaru and his wife Chiyoko. These Meiji-era pioneers paved the way for the Mt Fuji Summit Observatory, which is still in use today. Our hope is that the archive will provide a convenient way of viewing documents and images relating to Nonaka Itaru and Chiyoko, and in particular their bold attempt to obtain weather observations on the summit of Mt Fuji through the winter of 1895.

We have recently changed the design of this site in response to feedback from visitors. Further changes are also under consideration, such as additional pages in English for an international audience. As an archive, our aim is to provide as much information as possible about the sources and dates of the materials we publish, and to make them available for research activities.

During the current pandemic, we also hope you will take the chance to avoid the crowds by visiting this online museum. Please feel free to let us know what you think of our archive. And, if you are interested, you are welcome to join us and help support these activities.
